Majority of U.S.-produced met coal now MCPA represented

The Metallurgical Coal Producers Association (MCPA) has revealed that a majority of the nation’s metallurgical coal produced annually – about 55% – is now represented by the group.

While MCPA is a regional association representing Appalachian producers, coal tonnage by its members is all mined within a four-state region: Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.

The MCPA recently welcomed Blackhawk Mining to the association which, together with members Alpha Metallurgical Resources, Coronado Global, Ramaco, Robindale Energy and United Coal Company (a subsidiary of Metinvest), accounted for over 34 million tons of met coal produced in 2022.

According to the Energy Information Administration, 62 million tons of met coal were sold that year.

“The MCPA exists solely to represent and advocate for the met coal industry,” said MCPA President Ben Beakes.

“Our producing members are the leaders of the met coal industry. We are proud of the positive impact they have by mining the coal that is used to make steel needed to rebuild our world’s infrastructure and manufacture everyday products which affect so many lives.”

MCPA members employ 7,000 miners and support staff at 68 different mines in four different states.
