Equipment producer Sandvik has pulled back the curtain on a new 16-liter, Stage V engine option for its 51-tonne Toro TH551i truck to offer users more power, higher speeds and improved productivity.
The Volvo Penta 585-kW output engine offers strong, reliable performance, the OEM said, with a design that can fit perfectly with the underground truck’s design.
It succeeds the company’s 515-kW Tier 4i and offers shortened cycle time as well.
“As the engine output power exceeds 560 kW, instead of fitting the truck with a diesel particulate filter, other means are utilized to reduce emissions: the truck exhaust after treatment system contains a Selective Catalytic Reduction system (SCR) that uses diesel exhaust fluid to reduce emissions of NOx without sacrificing performance or fuel efficiency,” Sandvik noted.
It also pointed out that its common rail injection and dual-stage turbo charging will provide users with a high power density and low fuel consumption, low noise and low emissions, and an optimal cooling solution in the engine will minimise parasitic energy losses.
The Stage V engine of the newly released model requires ultra-low-sulfur fuel and low-ash engine oil though, in addition to running on traditional fossil diesel, the Toro TH551i can also use paraffinic diesel fuels to meet EN 15940 standard outlines.
The new release features Sandvik’s operator speed assist functionality as standard, providing sites with improved safety and easier operation, specifically in downhill driving.
“The speed assist function can be set to limit the truck top speed automatically, allowing the operator to focus on driving,” the OEM said.
“The system identifies whether the truck is driving on level or on an incline, and the control system selects the correct speed limit values without any action required from the operator. As the engine brake is used as the primary speed control, the operator speed assist reduces brake wear. Engine wear is also reduced since engine RPMs are maintained on the optimal level.”
The 51-t Toro TH551i and 63-t Toro TH663i are Sandvik’s two largest i-series trucks.
In early September, Sandvik also announced its Toro LH515i underground loader.
The 15-tonne size class machine is the next-generation version of the OEM’s current LH514, and while it has a greater capacity it has been designed to operate with the same footprint.
“This new member of the Toro family has been redesigned from the ground up, leveraging all of the benefits of its predecessor, while improving the design based on customer feedback,” Sandvik said.
Specifically, it features a new Sandvik intelligent control system with 12-inch touchscreen color display for easier loader health monitoring, easier data access and more efficient troubleshooting.
It has been optimized for use with Sandvik’s AutoMine and OptiMine systems and, to ensure quick and efficient maintenance, the loader offers smart placement of key service areas and service access. It also comes with premium cabin ergonomics for operator comfort
Toro LH515i is available with two different engine configurations from Volvo Penta: the state-of-the-art 265 kW Stage V diesel engine, and the 256 kW Tier III engine. It also is equipped with a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) exhaust gas technology and a new diesel particulate filter (DPF) with Stage V configuration.
“To further help to reduce their greenhouse gas footprint, both versions of engines are fully compatible with paraffinic diesel fuels meeting the EN 15940 standard,” Sandvik said.
