ISMSSE 2024 coming to the Steel City

The International Symposium on Mine Safety Science and Engineering is a five-day event featuring presentations and exhibits on new concepts and emerging technologies in mine safety.

The 7th International Symposium on Mine Safety Science and Engineering (ISMSSE), August 17-21, will bring together experts in mine safety science and engineering, as well as related fields at the Hilton Garden Inn Pittsburgh/Southpoint in Canonsburg, Pa.

Hosted by Penn State University, the symposium allows attendees to hear presentations and take short courses on new concepts, methodologies, and emerging technologies in mine safety science and engineering, and view technical equipment exhibits.

Keynote sessions will be led by George W. Luxbacher, deputy associate director at NIOSH, “The Future of Mineworker Health and Safety;” Derek Elsworth, G. Albert Shoemaker Chair and Professor of Energy and Mineral Engineering and Geosciences at Penn State University, “Overpressure-Driven Gas Outbursts and their Mitigation by Dynamic Gas (CO2) Fracturing;” and Christopher N. ABOUT ICMSSE
In 2011, professors Xueqiu He and Hani Mitri initiated the first “International Symposium on Mine Safety Science and Engineering” in Beijing, China.

The second and the fourth symposiums were successfully held in Beijing in 2013 and 2018. The third symposium was held in Montreal, Canada, in 2016. The fifth and sixth editions were held in Katowice, Poland, in 2021, and Harbin, China, in 2023, respectively.

Mission
The mission of the ICMSSE is to promote mine safety science and engineering research and education for the well being of the global mining industry and its workforce, through the organization of high quality, internationally recognized events such as symposia and workshop and other international events.

Vision
The vision of the ICMSSE is to become a major and influential body of researchers and experts in the field of mine safety that is recognized by industry and governments in mining countries around the globe. To be a part of the Women in Mining Mentor Network as a mentor or mentee, visit here.
