{"id":9758,"date":"2025-03-13T19:47:38","date_gmt":"2025-03-13T19:47:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/northamericanmining.com\/?p=9758"},"modified":"2025-04-14T20:34:51","modified_gmt":"2025-04-14T20:34:51","slug":"msha-issues-safety-alert-in-response-to-10-fatalities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/northamericanmining.com\/index.php\/2025\/03\/13\/msha-issues-safety-alert-in-response-to-10-fatalities\/","title":{"rendered":"MSHA issues safety alert in response to 10 fatalities"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) reported that 10 miner fatalities have occurred between Jan. 3 and March 5 \u2013 more than triple the number for the same period in 2024.\u00a0 Accidents classified as Powered Haulage remain the most common with four fatalities, followed by Machinery (two fatalities), and Fall of Face, Rib, Side or Highwall (two fatalities).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Four fatalities involved failures of ground or coal rib conditions.&nbsp; Four fatalities involved improper maintenance or unsafe operation of equipment.&nbsp;One fatality involved explosives, and another involved not locking and tagging out equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MSHA asks you to remain vigilant every day at our nation\u2019s mines. Fatalities can be prevented by implementing effective safety and health programs. Important elements in any safety and health program include workplace examinations, hazard recognition and avoidance, and training. To prevent serious and fatal accidents, everyone in the mining industry needs to be alert for hazards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MSHA is urging the mining community to focus on identifying and eliminating safety and health hazards.&nbsp; \u201cWhen we work together, we can succeed in improving safety and health for miners,\u201d the agency said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MSHA recommends the following best practices to avoid accidents:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Conduct examinations prior to working or traveling near ribs and highwalls.&nbsp; For highwalls, conduct more frequent examinations after periods of rain, freezing and thawing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Operate and maintain equipment in accordance with manufacturer\u2019s recommendations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Clear and remove all persons from the blast area unless suitable blasting shelters are provided to protect persons from flyrock.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure tasks are performed safely.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Train miners in safe maintenance and repair procedures.
