According to a Reuters <\/em>report from June 11, Canadian Minister of the Environment and Climate Change Jonathan Wilkinson has said that the country will not approve any new thermal coal mining projects or plans for expansions to existing operations, citing environmental damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wilkinson reportedly said that thermal coal was the single largest climate change contributor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe government considers that these projects are likely to cause unacceptable environmental effects within federal jurisdiction and are not aligned with Canada\u2019s domestic and international climate change commitments,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe continued mining and use of thermal coal for energy production in the world runs counter to what is needed to effectively combat climate change.\u201d<\/p>Jonathan Wilkinson<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
