The U.S. Department of Labor has announced up to $1 million in funding available in Brookwood-Sago grants to support the delivery of education and training to the nation\u2019s mining community to help them identify, avoid and prevent unsafe and unhealthy working conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
Established by the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006, the program honors 25 miners who perished in disasters in 2001 at the Jim Walter Resources #5 mine in Brookwood, Ala., and at the Sago mine in Buckhannon, W.Va., in 2006. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Administered by the department\u2019s Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), the grants will fund education and training programs focused on workplace safety and health hazards faced by miners. These programs will focus on the following hazards:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In awarding the Brookwood-Sago grants, MSHA will give special emphasis to education and training programs that target miners at smaller mines and underserved populations in the industry and make diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility priorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The closing date for applications is\u00a0September 9, with grants awarded on or before\u00a0September 30.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
