Metso and Avalon Advanced Materials are now in a strategic partnership established to further the development of a battery-grade lithium hydroxide production facility in Ontario, Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Under the terms of the non-binding memorandum of understanding, Avalon will be able to license Metso\u2019s technology and solutions to produce lithium hydroxide cathode materials to serve the EV market. Metso will be permitted to conduct testing and engineering work at Avalon\u2019s portfolio of critical-mineral projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n“Metso’s platform and technology perfectly complement Avalon’s vision to complete an integrated lithium value chain in Ontario, predicated on innovative process solutions,” said Avalon president Zeeshan Syed.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe view Metso as an integral part of this rapidly growing sector, and a foundational partner for developing best-in-class processing capabilities that are environmentally sustainable.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mikko Rantaharju, Vice President, Hydrometallurgy at Metso, added that the company is looking forward to being a part of a long-term vision to be a mid-stream supplier in the lithium hydroxide space. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The innovative alkaline process allows for elimination of potentially harmful chemicals such as sulfuric acid, and comparatively reduces overall solid waste and emissions, making it environmentally friendlier and safer overall for workers and local surrounding communities,\u201d Rantaharju said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The parties aim to sign a definitive agreement during the third quarter of 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
