{"id":5098,"date":"2023-06-16T21:13:07","date_gmt":"2023-06-16T21:13:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/northamericanmining.com\/?p=5098"},"modified":"2023-06-20T12:32:37","modified_gmt":"2023-06-20T12:32:37","slug":"msha-impact-inspections-catch-335-violations-in-april","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/northamericanmining.com\/index.php\/2023\/06\/16\/msha-impact-inspections-catch-335-violations-in-april\/","title":{"rendered":"MSHA impact inspections catch 335 violations in April"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has reminded producers that mining in hot work areas during the summer can cause serious health issues for miners.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everyone needs to recognize the hazards of heat stress and mine operators should provide heat-stress recognition training, monitoring and personal protective equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Symptoms of heat stress, the agency said, include: hot, usually dry, red or spotted skin; body temperature over 105\u02da F; confusion; a pale or flushed face; and muscle cramps from loss of sodium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Heat stress prevention techniques include:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Provide cool drinking water near miners;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Encourage miners to drink a cup of water every 15 to 20 minutes;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Avoid drinks with caffeine and large amounts of sugar;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Use sunblockers, proper protective clothing and shade;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Use administrative controls to rotate miners on hot jobs; and<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Schedule heavy tasks during cooler times of the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When treating symptoms, MSHA stressed that those offering aid DO:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Remove the miner from the hot area.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Apply cool wet cloths.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Give water if the miner is awake.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Seek medical attention if there is no improvement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, they should NOT apply ice directly to the skin; allow the miner to become so cold that shivering develops; or leave the miner alone.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has reminded producers that mining in hot work areas during the summer can cause serious health issues for miners.&nbsp; Everyone needs to recognize the hazards of heat stress and mine operators should provide heat-stress recognition training, monitoring and personal protective equipment.
