{"id":2872,"date":"2022-08-08T15:10:36","date_gmt":"2022-08-08T15:10:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/northamericanmining.com\/?p=2872"},"modified":"2022-08-08T15:10:37","modified_gmt":"2022-08-08T15:10:37","slug":"at-least-10-remain-trapped-at-flooded-mexico-coal-mine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/northamericanmining.com\/index.php\/2022\/08\/08\/at-least-10-remain-trapped-at-flooded-mexico-coal-mine\/","title":{"rendered":"At least 10 remain trapped at flooded Mexico coal mine"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pumps are continuing feverishly to pull water from a flooded coal mine in the Sabinas municipality of Mexico\u2019s Coahuila state as 10 miners remain trapped underground since a flooding event on August 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to an <em>ABC News<\/em> report, Mexican president Andres Manuel Lopez \u2013 who has been to the site in northern Mexico \u2013 is calling for increased rescue efforts in fear time is expiring to find the workers alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At current, there are nearly 400 at the site, including military scuba divers, involved with the search, per <em>Reuters<\/em>. However, the report said, it has so far been too dangerous to enter the mine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While pumping has done much to lower water levels, there are still large volumes to be extracted, Coahuila Gov. Miguel Angel Riquelme told <em>ABC<\/em>, and levels have dropped significantly from an initial 34-meter depth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added that five workers were able to escape from the operation \u2013 which has not been identified but called \u201ccrudely constructed\u201d \u2013 just after the incident occurred, but no survivors have been found since.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same report said the miners had been doing excavation on a nearby portion of the mine when they hit the waterlogged area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coahuila Attorney General Gerardo Marquez said his office has requested information from the landowner and mine concession holder but declined to name either of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coahuila is the primary coal producing area in Mexico.
