In tandem with its mission to continue reducing its climate impact, Weir Group has committed itself to the Science Based Targets initiative, which its CEO said will transform its environmental footprint moving forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The company will set its emissions reduction targets in line with those of the Paris Agreement, and that will be over and above Weir\u2019s already-existing Scope 1 and Scope 2 Carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) targets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAs we look at our broader value chain, CO2e emissions beyond our own facilities (Scope 3) are dominated by the use of our products and solutions in our customers\u2019 operations,\u201d the company said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
\u201cEngineering innovative products and solutions that significantly drive down those emissions will not only deliver Weir\u2019s climate ambition but also that of our customers, and some of our technologies already offer energy savings of up to 40%.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Weir expects to publish its updated targets and have them validated during this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cFurther innovation to reduce energy consumption per tonne of ore processed will help drive emissions down. But meeting SBTi expectations will also require broader energy transformation in mining and we are ready to partner with customers and the industry to help make that happen,\u201d the company said, calling the commitment to the SBTi an \u201cimportant step\u201d in its strategy to further reduce emissions from its own operations as well as in its wider value chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
