{"id":10903,"date":"2025-08-21T16:13:51","date_gmt":"2025-08-21T16:13:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/northamericanmining.com\/?p=10903"},"modified":"2025-09-03T14:46:36","modified_gmt":"2025-09-03T14:46:36","slug":"msha-reports-17th-and-18th-fatalities-of-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/northamericanmining.com\/index.php\/2025\/08\/21\/msha-reports-17th-and-18th-fatalities-of-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"MSHA reports 16th and 17th fatalities of 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MSHA reported that on July 26, an electrician at Stillwater Mine, Stillwater, Mont., was electrocuted when he came in contact with one phase of a 13,200-volt three phase power source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the 16th fatality reported in 2025, and the first classified as \u201cElectrical.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MSHA recommends the following best practices to avoid this type of accident:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Always lock out, tag out, and try out electrical equipment prior to work.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Verify circuits are de-energized using properly rated test equipment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leave protective covers in place until electrically powered equipment is de-energized.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Always ensure High Voltage equipment conductors are grounded before beginning work.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Always use proper tools and Personal Protective Equipment when working with electricity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MSHA also reported that on July 29, a contractor at Academy Black, Clovis, Calif., died when the excavator he was tramming toppled forward, causing the cab to land on a boulder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the 17th fatality reported in 2025, and the fourth classified as \u201cMachinery.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MSHA recommends the following best practices to avoid this type of accident:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Maintain the boom in the direction of travel when tramming.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maintain control of self-propelled mobile equipment while it is in motion.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure miners operate excavators perpendicular to the slope.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Task train miners in the safe operation and potential hazards of all equipment, including avoiding ground conditions that can cause the equipment to tip over.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Conduct workplace examinations of all work areas prior to beginning work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MSHA reported that on July 26, an electrician at Stillwater Mine, Stillwater, Mont., was electrocuted when he came in contact with one phase of a 13,200-volt three phase power source.
