Missouri S&T symposium to address small modular reactors in retired mines.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n

Could some of Missouri\u2019s decommissioned mines potentially become secure sites for small modular nuclear reactors and help advance the state\u2019s clean energy future? Researchers at Missouri University of Science and Technology believe so and will hold a free symposium related to the topic on August 5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a real opportunity here to connect Missouri\u2019s mining history with its energy future,\u201d said Dr. Joshua Schlegel, associate professor of Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Science at Missouri S&T.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBy harnessing the collective expertise of industry and government professionals with Missouri S&T, we hope to eventually see this become a reality and help communities revitalize retired mine sites while supporting sustainable energy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Presentations and panel meetings at the Mines to Megawatts event will focus on establishing a common framework for discussing the topic, identifying challenges and key stakeholder needs, and developing next steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Participants are asked to register at nuclear.mst.edu\/minestomegawatts. The event will be held in the univeristy\u2019s Havener Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
