Burgundy Diamond Mines has decided to temporarily suspend open pit mining at its Point Lake operation, one of two active sites at its Ekati diamond mine in the Northwest Territories of Canada. The miner said the operation had become \u201csub-economic\u201d due to a weak diamond market. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The decision has led to the layoffs of hundreds of employees and contractors, as reported by CBC News<\/em>. The Union of Northern Workers said that it was informed that 160 of its members were affected, but it has not yet received an official list of those laid off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The miner stated it will continue to maintain Point Lake, ensuring that the surface mine can quickly and efficiently restart operations if market conditions improve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Burgundy will continue to operate the Misery underground site, noting that production rates at the operation have significantly improved in recent months due to better mining techniques and equipment utilization. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ekati is located in the Lac de Gras region of the Northwest Territories, approximately 300 kilometers northeast of Yellowknife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
