{"id":10349,"date":"2025-05-28T16:42:32","date_gmt":"2025-05-28T16:42:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/northamericanmining.com\/?p=10349"},"modified":"2025-05-28T16:44:53","modified_gmt":"2025-05-28T16:44:53","slug":"department-of-energy-designates-steelmaking-coal-critical-material","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/northamericanmining.com\/index.php\/2025\/05\/28\/department-of-energy-designates-steelmaking-coal-critical-material\/","title":{"rendered":"Department of Energy designates steelmaking coal \u2018critical material\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"115\" src=\"https:\/\/northamericanmining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/DOE.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10352\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a push to strengthen U.S. energy and manufacturing security, the U.S. Energy Department confirmed the designation of metallurgical coal as a critical material under the Energy Act of 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On May 23 U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright said the addition is in line with President Trump\u2019s Executive Order \u201cReinvigorating America\u2019s Beautiful Clean Coal Industry\u201d and will underscore the administration\u2019s commitment to American energy dominance, manufacturing resurgence, and strengthening America\u2019s energy and industrial security.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA Department of Energy analysis concluded that metallurgical coal, a key input for steel production, meets the statutory definition of a critical material,\u201d the DOE said. \u201cA robust steel industry is fundamental to U.S. manufacturing, infrastructure development, and economic resilience.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Steel, key to energy technologies, transportation, and more, has its core with both metallurgical coal and anthracite coal as materials \u2013 and those are vital to American interests.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMetallurgical coal is more than a fuel \u2013 it is a cornerstone of our industrial base,\u201d said Wright. \u201cBy designating metallurgical coal as a critical material, we are ensuring that American steel, generated by American coal, remains the backbone of our manufacturing sector.\u201d\u202f \u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why coal qualifies as a critical material:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Metallurgical coal possesses unique properties necessary for producing coke, the fuel and reactant required for steel production using the blast furnace \u2013 basic oxygen furnace method.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Anthracite coal, concentrated in the Appalachian region, plays a key role in the electric arc furnace method, which accounts for approximately 70% of domestic steel production.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The U.S. coal industry provides reliable, domestically sourced metallurgical and anthracite coal essential to supporting both steelmaking processes.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are over 150 metallurgical coal mines in the United States that employ tens of thousands of Americans.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shared infrastructure and workforce supporting both thermal and metallurgical coal production are under strain from declining investment and operational capacity. Without intervention, this erosion will jeopardize domestic steel dominance.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The designation underscores the multiple threats facing the U.S. steel sector, including foreign anti-competitive practices, unreliable supply chains, and underinvestment in critical upstream materials, the DOE said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn accordance with the President\u2019s proclamation on adjusting steel imports, this determination supports strategic supply chain development and reindustrialization efforts,\u201d the agency added.\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The designation of coal for steelmaking as a critical material is inclusive of its supply chain vulnerability and its indispensable role in the energy sector.
